Do You Have Fear of Taking Chances?

I was skimming through an issue of O magazine recently and the results of an interesting poll they took of their readers. The poll asked: What would you do if you had no fear? They posted quite a few of the reader’s responses which had me feeling – sad. In fact it was rather heart-breaking.

There were around a dozen lovely women who had all kinds of dreams that they fettered away due to some fear-based thought forms that they were allowing to control their lives.

This saddens me because for the past 10 years I’ve been helping people take action to create amazing lives – and to teach the skills necessary for dealing with the very thought forms our minds generate that keep us stuck in mediocrity.

The common thread in all the comments was the fear of taking chances.

So let’s talk about that for a bit since we all suffer from those kinds of thoughts. So, what are a few of the proposals our minds might put forth regarding this fear? See if any or all of these are familiar to you.

  • What if it doesn’t work out?
  • What if everyone says “I told you so?”
  • What if I don’t like the outcome I thought I wanted?
  • What if it doesn’t work out and I can’t go back – then what?

Well my question is – what if you live your entire life doing something you don’t like? If you aren’t enjoying your life right now – if you aren’t passionate about what you’re doing – then you can be absolutely certain that you’re going to live a lifetime suffering. That you can be sure of!

And if certainty is what you want in life, and if you’re willing to stick with what you think is safe as opposed to taking a chance of having an audacious, amazing, joy-filled, and passionate life – then go for it. But please don’t be complaining about it in my company.

If you’re not willing to take action regarding your circumstances then why talk about something you’re unwilling to change. No one wants to hear the same story of woe over and over again.

That’s insanity!!

So here’s the thing. No one said life was certain. You can lose that cushy job you hate tomorrow. Right? Better you take control of your life than be at the mercy of the winds of a boss, the economy, or whatever. True you can leave what you have right now and there’s no guarantee that what you want to do is going to work out.

But if it doesn’t – you can do something else. And if that doesn’t work you can do something else. And you can keep doing something else until your life is incredible.

Let go of your belief that if you leave what you have now – you have to immediately move into the perfect career next. Creating a life you love is NOT (read my lips here) – not necessarily a straight path.

If you understand that it’s filled with twists and turns and unexpected outcomes – then you won’t get nervous when you leave what you think is certain and end up starting 3 different businesses or change what you are doing several times before you create your dream job.

In the end it doesn’t matter what anyone thinks about you.

It only matters about what you want to do in your life, and what your deepest desires are. The ones coming from your heart that are guiding you to manifest the talents and blessings only YOU were imbued with from birth.

So if you’re one of those people who are saying: “If I wasn’t afraid I’d be doing x,y or z” – please get someone to help you change that right now rather than waiting years and suffering a slow and painful existence. Truly there’s no reason to not to be creating miracles in your life.

You deserve it, you’re worth it, and there are plenty of people in your life to cheer you on and help you when you’re feeling lost.

All you have to do is take advantage of all the universe has placed in your path to assist you! If it’s really meant to be – you might find your life crumbling to pieces around you in a conspiracy to push you to be all you can be in life.

And why wait for that to happen?

So please post your ah-ha’s and thoughts about what I’ve shared today. Remember – what you post could change someone else’s life – so don’t hold back.

Your posts are always so inspiring, Sheri! Those chances/changes are on every level, too, from the big life decisions to deciding on a color scheme for a bedroom. They say the way we do one thing is the way we do everything and that goes for how we choose to make decisions, take chances or approach change.

I think the challenge for me is that I did take the plunge. I started my own business after I got laid off (evidently the decision to leave a “secure” job I hated was taken out of my hands) but now I’m struggling more than I ever have (well maybe not quite as badly as university, but at least then I had student loans to live on–now I’m still paying them back). Fears can be validated in some ways. But on the other hand, I am happy that I don’t work for a boss who doesn’t treat me well, although now one of my clients doesn’t treat me well now…so there is that. I think the moral of the story is that if you don’t sort your stuff out at one point in your life, it’ll repeat in various ways until you do sort it out, whether it’s setting strong boundaries or whatever else it is. I hope I didn’t take away from this post as my words here are only a reflection of my current experience so I certainly cannot speak for anyone else’s experience.

      Dear Christine,
For sure! Getting clear on the limitations that we have helps us move beyond them – subtle as many of them might be. I feel that it helps to have a little side job to take the financial pressure off when you are bootstrapping a business and recommend that highly. Also business coaching is critical and made the difference for me. Having a business plan that you are committed to executing is key!
      Blessings, Sheri
